What You Can Support
The Department of Philosophy at UNC Charlotte values a dynamic relationship between theory and lived experience in which each informs and transforms the other. Our primary focus is on the interdisciplinary nature of philosophy and how ethical, political, epistemological, and other philosophical questions apply to subjects such as science, public policy, medicine and health, social justice, art, and information technology, among others. Your gift will directly affect UNC Charlotte philosophy students, faculty and staff in the following ways:
Often students cannot afford to travel to regional and national philosophy conferences, where they can present their own papers, learn from top philosophers in their specialty, strategize with their peers, and preview post-graduate opportunities. Your gift will provide the means for philosophy majors and MA students to travel and attend these professional workshops.
Studying abroad is a wonderful opportunity to engage with a different culture and study philosophy right where it was first developed! Through our “Existentialism in Paris” course in France, students learn how French philosophers developed a philosophy focused on freedom, choice, and responsibility in the wake of the horrors of WWII. In our “Ethics in Athens” course in Greece, students examine the question “What is a life worth living?” combining ancient Greek philosophy with contemporary studies in psychology. Your gift can help a student have the educational experience of a lifetime.
Our faculty’s own original research is fundamental to our department and the courses we teach. We activity contribute to important ethical, social, political, and other philosophical debates both nationally and internationally, helping shape the fields in which we work. (Find out more here.) Your tax-deductible gift will make cutting edge research possible and help support the next generation of philosophers.
Our team of faculty and students work together in partnership with area high schools to bring philosophy into their classrooms and to provide our majors the experience of teaching philosophy to teenagers. We also do outreach work with area hospitals, serving on their ethics committees to help doctors, nurses, and hospital administrators grapple with difficult ethical decisions. And we have worked with the city of Charlotte to use art and aesthetics as practices that contribute to social justice. Your gift will enhance our ability to help others in Charlotte and give back to the community.

Any excess earnings are reinvested, allowing the fund to grow. Endowments may be created for student scholarships and fellowships, faculty chairs and professorships, or many other purposes.
Planned gifts include gifts of marketable securities such as stocks and bonds; estate gifts through a bequest in a will or through a trust; charitable gift annuities or charitable remainder trusts that provide a lifetime income stream to the donor; and other gifts of real estate or tax-deferred retirement assets.
