Giving Back to the Department of Philosophy

UNC Charlotte’s Philosophy Department is an interdisciplinary and intertraditional program that values dynamic relationships between theory and lived experience in which each informs and transforms the other.  As one of the oldest disciplines in the university system, philosophy is very relevant to contemporary issues and problems, and its cultivation of philosophical inquiry, critical thinking, and ethical exploration is needed today more than ever.

  • Faculty Research – Our faculty is very research active, publishing books and articles that connect philosophy with social, political, ethical, medical, and global issues.  Your gift will help us bring other experts working in these fields to the UNC Charlotte campus to share their work and collaborate with us.  It also will help us attend conferences and workshops at which we can get feedback on and disseminate our ideas to peers in our fields.

  • Student Research – Our graduate and undergraduate students are active developing their research too! Recently our students have presented their work at the Joint Meeting of the North Carolina Philosophical Society and the South Carolina Society for Philosophy, and at the Southern Appalachian Undergraduate Philosophy Conference.

  • Study Abroad – Your gift will help us provide scholarships to undergraduate students who study abroad as part of PHIL 3140 Existentialism in Paris.  As of spring 2016—the semester in which we successfully launched our first study abroad class—we offer this course every spring.  It enables students to learn the philosophies of Sartre, Beauvoir, Camus and Fanon in the city where existentialism was born, as Parisians grappled with questions of choice, responsibility and guilt after the Nazi-occupation during WWII.

  • Intercollegiate Ethics Bowl – Our majors annually participate in this ethics-oriented debate team, crafting arguments concerning real-life case studies involving thorny ethical issues.  Your gift will help support their travel expenses as they compete regionally and then (if successful) nationally with other university teams.   In 2015, our team placed 3rd in the national competition held in California!

  • Community Outreach – The philosophy department seeks to work with local high schools to bring philosophy into their classrooms.  Your gift will help fund events at high schools run by our faculty and graduate students to introduce high school students to the fun and rigors of philosophical inquiry.

Gifts made to create an endowed fund are invested for perpetuity. A portion of the earned income is then used to support the fund’s purpose. Any excess earnings are reinvested, allowing the fund to grow. Endowments may be created for student scholarships and fellowships, faculty chairs and professorships, or many other purposes.
