The application deadline for the fall semester is May 1, and the application deadline for the spring semester is October 1.

Admission to the Masters Program in Ethics and Applied Philosophy

Master of Arts in Ethics and Applied Philosophy

The program is designed to foster the application of ethical and philosophical knowledge to currently pressing concerns in social, economic, medical, legal, commercial, cultural, and political contexts and associations. The department offers both theoretical and applied courses.  These courses provide students with a comprehensive, normative, politically-informed and logically consistent training relevant to current challenges encountered in business, medical associations, national and international political contexts, as well as public education.

 General Requirements
  • The completion of an application form
  • A one-page statement of purpose (with one copy) outlining why the applicant seeks admission to the program
  • Three recommendations submitted via the Apply Yourself on-line appliction system using the recommendation form located at: http://www.uncc.edu/gradmiss/p_app_instructions.html
  • GRE or MAT scores (mailed to the Graduate Scool at the address below)
  • One official transcript from all colleges or universities you have attended other than UNC Charlotte (mailed to the Graduate School at the address below)
  • A $55.00 application fee

 

Philosophy Admission Requirements

In addition to meeting the university’s graduate admission requirements, all prospective students must:
 
  • Submit a personal statement outlining why the applicant seeks admission to the program.
  • Submit three academic letters of recommendation, attached to the recommendation forms required by the graduate school, which address the student’s philosophical skills and/or ethical reasoning. 
 
Degree Requirements
The Master of Arts in Ethics and Applied Philosophy requires the completion, with a GPA of 3.0 or better, of a minimum of 30 semester hours of approved graduate course work. The successful completion of a Thesis or Internship is also required for the Master of Arts. Prior to starting a thesis or Internship, a student in the M.A. program will have to apply for readmission if the student has not taken any class for two years. All degree requirements must be completed within six calendar years of first enrollment in the program.

Admission to Candidacy Requirements
An Admission to Candidacy form is to be filed upon the completion of 24 hours of course work.
 
Advising
The coordinator of graduate studies serves as formal advisor to the graduate students.
 
Transfer Credit
Up to 6 hours earned from other accredited institutions may be eligible for transfer credit.  Formal approval must be obtained from the coordinator of graduate studies and the Dean of the Graduate School.
 
Language Requirement
Although students are not required to demonstrate proficiency in a foreign language as a formal requirement of the program, they are expected to acquire competency in and use whatever languages they need to pursue their research interests.
 
Thesis
Students have the option of writing a thesis (3 semester hours credit) in fulfilling the capstone/concluding project requirements.  Both Thesis and its alternative (Internship) are linked to the Directed Readings/Research course.

Additional Requirements

In addition to the materials to be submitted to the Graduate School, the Philosophy Department requires:

  • A sample of your philosophical writing, preferably addressing an ethical issue to be uploaded within the application system at http://www.uncc.edu/gradmiss/p_app_instructions.html
  • Three academic letters of recommendation, in addition to the recommendation forms required by the graduate school (supplied by the same recommenders), which address the student’s philosophical skills and/or ethical reasoning. These letters of recommendation are to be uploaded  by the recommender within the application system at http://www.uncc.edu/gradmiss/p_app_instructions.html. Recommendors will see the following page shown below and should choose the "upload document" button.
  • AY_recommendation_submission

Students who have been enrolled in a graduate program at UNC Charlotte within the past two years may not be required to re-submit your GRE scores and transcripts. However, if you want the Office of Graduate Admissions to refer to the scores and transcripts they have on file, please indicate that you wish for them to do so when you submit your application.

Test Scores for Admission to:

M.A. in Ethics and Applied Philosophy

The Department of Philosophy uses the general requirements for admission to its M.A. as those set by the Graduate School of UNC Charlotte. Consequently, applicants can submit their scores on either the Miller's Analogy Test (MAT) or the Graduate Record Examination (GRE). Information on each is given below.

Miller's Analogy Test (MAT)
• Cost: $70
• Reporting: 10-15 days from test date plus delivery time.
• UNC Charlotte's School Code is 1370.

The MAT may be accepted by some programs instead of the GRE. The MAT is administered by the Psychological Testing Corporation. To schedule a test, please call 1-800-228-0752. The MAT is also given by the UNC Charlotte Counseling Center on most Wednesdays when school is in session. Contact the Counseling Center (704-687-2105) to schedule an appointment to take the MAT. Additional information on the MAT can be found at http://www.tpcweb.com/mat/.

Graduate Record Examination (GRE)
• Cost: $140 in the U.S.
• Reporting: 10-15 days from test date plus delivery time for computerized test, 4-6 weeks for paper version.
• UNC Charlotte's School Code is 5105.

The GRE is accepted for most programs except for the Master of Business Administration and Master of Accountancy. The GRE measures verbal, quantitative, and analytical skills that have been acquired over a long period of time and are not related to any specific field of study. The GRE is administered by Educational Testing Service and is offered year-round at test centers (such Centers) worldwide. In Charlotte, the GRE is administered by Prometric Testing Center (#704-364-7758). To register for the GRE, you may also call 1-800-GRE-CALL.
